Valve said a PayPal banking partner stopped processing Steam transactions in early July, forcing the company to disable PayPal for purchases made in any currency other than the euro, Canadian dollar, British pound, Japanese yen, Australian dollar and U.S. dollar. Players in affected regions began reporting outages last month, and Valve confirmed the scope of the disruption in an update to its purchasing-issues support page. According to Valve, the bank’s abrupt withdrawal is tied to a wider crackdown on adult-content games. The company linked the move to earlier pressure exerted on payment networks—most notably Mastercard—by activist groups such as Australia’s Collective Shout. Valve said it is evaluating additional payment methods and hopes to restore PayPal in unsupported currencies, but gave no timetable.
