French Prime Minister François Bayrou used the annual dinner of the Representative Council of Jewish Institutions of France (CRIF) in Paris on 3 July to condemn a surge in antisemitic incidents and promise stronger government action. Bayrou said authorities had already logged 325 antisemitic acts since the start of 2025, 10 % of which were physical assaults, and argued that anonymity on social-media platforms must be addressed to curb online hate. The prime minister also reiterated France’s commitment to a two-state solution in the Middle East, saying “no lasting peace can be achieved without the liberation of all hostages and mutual recognition of Israel and its neighbours.” Bayrou praised Jewish cultural contributions—highlighting that some of his children have learned Hebrew—and warned that antisemitism “is multiplying on screens” as well as in the streets. CRIF president Yonathan Arfi urged mainstream parties to marginalise the far-left La France Insoumise (LFI), which he accused of inflaming antisemitic sentiment. “Our political priority must be to render LFI’s influence residual,” he said, adding that French Jews should not have to choose between their identity and their security. Earlier the same day, Parliament definitively adopted a bill aimed at combating antisemitism in higher education by requiring dedicated antisemitism and racism officers at every university and strengthening disciplinary procedures. The legislation passed with support from the governing coalition, conservatives and the far right, while LFI and most Green lawmakers opposed it.
