France’s Foreign Ministry said on Sunday that Nour Attaalah, a student from Gaza who arrived in the country on 11 July under a government-funded scholarship, has left for Qatar after investigators uncovered past anti-Semitic statements on her social-media accounts. Attaalah had been due to enrol at Sciences Po Lille this autumn. Posts from the past two years, since deleted, reportedly called for the killing of Jews and led prosecutors to open a judicial probe for condoning terrorism. The ministry is also investigating how the comments escaped the vetting process that precedes the issuing of visas. Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot described the remarks as “unacceptable” and announced that France is freezing all student-evacuation programmes from Gaza while the inquiries proceed. The ministry declined to say how many other students may be affected.
