A Lebanese-born restaurateur in Vigo, north-west Spain, expelled a group of eight Israeli tourists from his Mimassa pizzeria on Tuesday, 8 July. In a one-minute video he filmed and later posted online, owner Samir Slim can be heard telling the customers, “You kill in Palestine—go eat in Gaza,” while removing their menus and half-drunk beers. The tourists replied “Viva Israel” and “Fuck Palestine” as they left. Slim told local newspaper Faro de Vigo that he acted after the visitors, whom he initially did not know were Israeli, behaved aggressively and demanded meat-free dishes. He said the decision was spontaneous and not aimed at Jews generally: “In my pocket cannot enter money paid by people who support genocide.” According to Slim, he first offered to cover their bill before ordering them out. The video has drawn wide online attention and prompted a formal complaint from a Madrid resident alleging an anti-Semitic hate crime. Vigo’s local police have forwarded an initial report to the National Police, which will decide whether to open an investigation. The Israeli Embassy in Madrid called the incident “completely unacceptable” and said a Europe where Jews fear speaking Hebrew “has a very serious problem.” Mimassa’s Google rating briefly fell after a wave of hostile reviews before the platform removed suspected fake posts.
