Since the beginning of 2025, France has experienced an unprecedented early spread of indigenous chikungunya cases, primarily in metropolitan regions. Nearly 53,750 biologically confirmed cases have been reported in Réunion, a French overseas department, where the virus has reached epidemic levels. In mainland France, the first indigenous case of chikungunya in 2025 was detected in La Crau, Var department, followed shortly by a second case in Prades-le-Lez, Hérault. By late June and early July, additional cases emerged in Corsica, Bouches-du-Rhône, Gard, and the Grand Est region, marking the northernmost spread of the virus in the country. As of mid-July, health authorities identified 30 indigenous chikungunya cases across 12 transmission clusters in metropolitan France, with no clusters yet considered extinguished. This early activity is linked to the ongoing epidemic in Réunion and a high number of imported cases, including travelers from Madagascar. Alongside chikungunya, France has also reported its first indigenous dengue fever cases in 2025, notably in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, with three episodes of dengue transmission and a total of 42 combined cases of chikungunya and dengue reported by late July. Public health agencies have initiated mosquito control and public awareness campaigns in affected areas, including Salon-de-Provence, which reported 10 cases in a single neighborhood. Meanwhile, chikungunya outbreaks have also been reported internationally, with cases in Macau, China, and a growing outbreak in southern China, as well as in Cuba's Matanzas community.
