A French appeals court has ordered the release of Georges Ibrahim Abdallah, a Lebanese pro-Palestinian militant who has been imprisoned in France for over 40 years. Abdallah was convicted in 1987 and sentenced to life imprisonment for his involvement in the 1982 assassinations of Israeli and American diplomats in Paris. He is considered one of the longest-serving prisoners in France. Despite being eligible for parole since 1999, all previous requests for his release had been denied. The court's decision was announced on July 17, 2025, and Abdallah is scheduled to be freed on July 25, 2025. Abdallah, aged 74, was a former leader of the Lebanese Armed Revolutionary Factions. His release marks the end of more than four decades of incarceration, during which he was held under various detention conditions. The ruling has been described as a victory by supporters and pro-Palestinian solidarity movements.
