Serge Atlaoui, a French national who was sentenced to death in Indonesia in 2007 for drug trafficking, has been granted conditional release by French justice authorities. After being transferred to France in February 2025 and incarcerated there, Atlaoui was authorized for parole by the tribunal d’application des peines in Melun, Seine-et-Marne. He was detained for 20 years, including 18 years on death row in Indonesia. Atlaoui was released from prison in Meaux on July 18, 2025. His release was confirmed by his wife, Sabine Atlaoui, and marked the end of his long legal ordeal. Upon release, Atlaoui expressed hope and gratitude, while his lawyer, Richard Sédillot, described the event as very moving.
