French lawmaker Olivier Marleix, a member of Les Républicains, was found dead at his home in Anet on Monday. Parliamentary and police sources said the 54-year-old took his own life, reportedly by hanging. An investigation has been opened to clarify the circumstances of the apparent suicide. Marleix had represented Eure-et-Loir’s second constituency in the National Assembly since 2012 and led the centre-right party’s parliamentary group from 2022 to 2024. A lawyer by training, he previously served as mayor of Anet for nine years and was an adviser to former president Nicolas Sarkozy. The father of two was known for his work on industrial policy and for spearheading a parliamentary probe into the 2014 sale of Alstom’s energy business to General Electric. News of his death prompted the Assemblée nationale to suspend its session and hold a minute of silence. Condolences were offered by Prime Minister Élisabeth Borne, former president Nicolas Sarkozy and politicians across party lines, who described Marleix as a rigorous and respectful opponent. Authorities have not specified when they will release further details of the inquiry.
