Spain’s second vice president and labour minister, Yolanda Díaz, attended Wednesday’s extraordinary plenary session of the Congress of Deputies despite the death of her father, veteran trade-union leader Suso Díaz, the previous day. The elder Díaz, a former regional secretary of the Comisiones Obreras union in Galicia and a prominent figure in the labour movement, died aged 80. Yolanda Díaz kept her scheduled role of replying to Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, who appeared before lawmakers to outline new measures against corruption, including the handling of the so-called Cerdán affair that has placed former PSOE organisation secretary Santos Cerdán in pre-trial detention. Parliamentary sources said Sánchez opened his speech by paying tribute to Suso Díaz, while deputies from across the chamber offered condolences to the vice president before the debate began.
