France’s National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (INSEE) released its 2024 ranking of the most popular baby names, confirming the continued dominance of Louise for girls and Gabriel for boys. INSEE’s annual list, compiled from birth certificates registered across mainland France and the overseas departments, recorded 3,125 newborn girls named Louise and 4,550 boys named Gabriel. Among girls, Jade and Ambre followed Louise with 3,055 and 2,815 births respectively, while Alba moved up to fourth place at 2,660, displacing Emma to fifth with 2,520. Alma, Romy, Rose, Alice and Anna completed the top ten. For boys, Raphaël ranked second with 3,470 registered births, ahead of Louis at 3,335. Léo rose to fourth with 3,325, pushing Noah to fifth at 3,260. Arthur, Adam, Jules, Maël and Léon rounded out the leading names. The annual naming statistics are closely watched for shifts in cultural preferences. INSEE has tracked baby names since 1900, providing a long-term view of changing fashions—ranging from Marie and Jean at the start of the 20th century to today’s Louise and Gabriel.
