French President Emmanuel Macron called for a rapid, low-tariff trade agreement between the European Union and the United States, saying the “good” deal would be one reached as soon as possible with the lowest duties possible. Speaking during a visit to Aveyron, Macron said he continues to seek a “zero-for-zero” arrangement but is prepared to accept a reciprocal 10% tariff while preserving existing duty-free treatment for sectors such as aerospace. Macron’s comments come six days before a July 9 deadline set by President Donald Trump, who has threatened to raise levies on EU goods to as high as 25% or more if talks fail. EU Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic is in Washington this week to try to finalize the accord, which European leaders say is essential to shield exporters—from cheese producers in Roquefort to industrial manufacturers—from escalating costs in the trans-Atlantic trade dispute.
