French President Emmanuel Macron and Colombian President Gustavo Petro exchanged sharp words during a panel at the Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development in Seville on 3 July. Petro accused wealthy nations of fuelling the climate crisis, weaponising anti-migration sentiment and allowing unequal access to Covid-19 vaccines. He argued that doses reached Europe and the United States far more quickly than poorer regions, and said political discourse in the global north had shifted from climate action to blaming migrants for social ills. Macron responded that Europe is not monolithic on migration, insisted many leaders fight the extreme right and asked Petro “not to simplify our political reality.” The French leader said he never gives lessons to countries of the south and expects the same respect in return. The exchange, which came in front of delegates from governments and multilateral lenders, underscored growing tensions between developing and developed nations over responsibility for climate finance and global health equity.
