The Mediterranean Sea reached its highest surface temperature ever recorded for the month of June, averaging 26.01 degrees Celsius, according to data from the European Copernicus program analyzed by Météo-France. This record was confirmed by multiple sources including French and international weather agencies. The warming trend is accelerating faster than anticipated, with temperatures currently exceeding typical mid-August levels. In some areas, such as the French Côte d’Azur and parts of Spain, sea surface temperatures have risen to as high as 30 to 31 degrees Celsius. This unprecedented rise in sea temperature during June is contributing to increased risks, including the potential intensification of severe weather phenomena like tropical-like storms known as danas. Despite a general temperature drop in many regions of France in early July, the Mediterranean region remains exceptionally warm, with air temperatures reaching 35.3 degrees Celsius in Montpellier on July 3.
