Spain has been experiencing extreme weather conditions throughout July 2025, marked by a combination of intense heatwaves and severe storms. The Spanish Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has issued multiple alerts across various provinces and autonomous communities. Early in the month, temperatures approached 40 degrees Celsius in 37 provinces, with heat warnings extending to 16 provinces by mid-July and maximum temperatures reaching up to 42 degrees Celsius in some areas, including Córdoba, Jaén, Granada, and Andalucía. Concurrently, a meteorological phenomenon known as a DANA (Depresión Aislada en Niveles Altos) triggered severe storms, heavy rainfall, hail, and strong winds primarily affecting northern and eastern Spain, including regions such as Valencia, Aragón, Navarra, La Rioja, and the Cantabrian coast. These storms resulted in up to 40 liters of rain per square meter in some provinces and caused widespread disruptions. Catalonia was particularly impacted by torrential rains leading to severe flooding, infrastructure damage, and the suspension of rail services. Emergency services have been conducting search and rescue operations for two individuals reported missing after being swept away by the river Foix in Cubelles town. The floods also affected areas in Aragón and Valencia, with reports of inundated hospitals, closed highways, and damaged commercial properties. Authorities have urged residents to stay indoors for safety. Despite the ongoing heatwave, forecasts indicate a forthcoming weather change with a trough bringing cooler temperatures and increased instability starting from July 15, which may alleviate the extreme heat but could also prolong storm activity. Overall, over half of Spain remains under heat alerts, with temperatures expected to remain high until at least July 18, while storm warnings continue for several communities.
