Conservative commentator Candace Owens said in a video posted late 30 June that she received a telephone call from former U.S. president Donald Trump, during which he allegedly asked her to stop questioning the gender of French first lady Brigitte Macron. Owens claims Trump told her he was making the request on behalf of French President Emmanuel Macron, who purportedly warned that France would withhold support for Russia-Ukraine peace talks unless the attacks ceased. Owens has for months promoted unsubstantiated rumors that Brigitte Macron is transgender. In her latest remarks, she said Trump assured her he had met the French first lady in person and believed “she looked like a woman,” but nevertheless urged Owens to end her commentary to avoid jeopardizing diplomatic efforts. Neither Trump’s office, the White House nor the Élysée Palace has commented on Owens’s account, and no evidence has emerged that France is linking its position in any peace negotiations to commentary by U.S. media figures. The claim has circulated widely on social media but remains unverified.
