The 17th correctional chamber of the Tribunal judiciaire de Paris opened a hearing on 9 July in a case pitting the anti-racism association SOS Racisme against feminist campaigner Marguerite Stern and the online outlet Frontières. SOS Racisme, represented in court by its president Dominique Sopo, accuses Stern and the media organisation of committing “public insults on the basis of origin, ethnicity or nationality”. The action follows statements in which Stern linked immigration, particularly from Afghanistan and Somalia, to violence against women. Taking the stand, Stern rejected the characterisation of her comments as insults, arguing that questions about the links between crime and immigration should not be deemed taboo. Frontières likewise framed the proceedings as an attempt at censorship of journalistic work. After testifying, Sopo left the courtroom before the lawyers’ closing arguments. The court is expected to deliberate after hearing the remaining pleadings, with a judgment date yet to be announced.
