A former Cobb County, Georgia, police officer drowned on 13 July after pulling five swimmers from a powerful rip current off Pawleys Island, South Carolina, local authorities said. Anderson “Chase” Childers, 38, entered the water with another bystander when a family became trapped about 4:45 p.m. Rescue crews later confirmed all five swimmers reached shore safely. Childers disappeared during the effort, prompting a search by Midway Fire Rescue and the U.S. Coast Guard. His body was recovered at about 6:15 p.m., roughly 90 minutes after the initial emergency call, according to the Pawleys Island Police Department. Childers spent more than three years with the Cobb County Police Department and had previously received a departmental lifesaving award. He also played minor-league baseball in the Baltimore Orioles organization. The Georgia native leaves behind his wife and three children; an online fundraiser for the family had raised more than $40,000 by Wednesday afternoon.
