Nine concert-goers were injured late Monday when a crowd surged on an escalator at Atlanta’s Vine City MARTA station minutes after Beyoncé concluded the final show of her Cowboy Carter tour at nearby Mercedes-Benz Stadium. MARTA said panic began when a woman screamed and ran—apparently after spotting an insect—prompting others to flee. The escalator reportedly accelerated and then stopped abruptly, causing people to fall onto one another. Eight victims were taken to hospitals; seven suffered cuts and bruises and one sustained a broken ankle. A ninth person declined transport. The escalator has been barricaded while MARTA’s safety division and manufacturer Schindler investigate the malfunction. Officials have not given a timeline for when the unit will reopen.
