A stampede at the Mansa Devi temple in the northern Indian city of Haridwar left six people dead and many others injured on Sunday, according to Garhwal Division Commissioner Vinay Shankar Pandey. The incident occurred on a pedestrian route leading to the hilltop shrine, which attracts large numbers of pilgrims during the Hindu month of Shravan. State officials said local police, disaster-response personnel and other rescue teams reached the site quickly and transferred the injured to nearby hospitals. Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said he is monitoring the relief operation. The accident adds to a series of deadly crowd crushes at religious gatherings across India this year.
