The leadership of Germany's far-right AfD party, including co-chairs Alice Weidel and Tino Chrupalla, has approved a substantial increase in their allowances, effectively doubling their salaries. This raise also extends to the rest of the AfD parliamentary group leadership. The justification given for the pay hike is the party's growth, now being the largest opposition faction in the Bundestag. The total allowances for the AfD parliamentary group, including those for Weidel and Chrupalla, have risen to approximately 1.4 million euros, compared to 2.01 million euros for the CDU/CSU and 1.8 million euros for the SPD in 2023. The decision has sparked internal dissent within the AfD. Ahead of an upcoming strategy meeting, discussions are expected regarding these increased allowances. Concurrently, the AfD is attempting to moderate its image by adopting a new code of conduct aimed at improving behavior in the Bundestag. This move is partly intended to influence the Union parties favorably and to challenge the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution's assessment of the party. The AfD has also revised its basic program to remove polarizing language, signaling a shift toward a more moderate stance in parliamentary conduct.
