Germany is weighing a €25 billion order for as many as 1,000 Leopard 2 main battle tanks and 2,500 Boxer armored vehicles, according to reports citing government and industry officials. The equipment would form seven new combat brigades requested by NATO as the alliance bolsters its eastern defences against Russia. The prospective deal is part of a broader overhaul of the Bundeswehr. Budget plans published in late June map a steady rise in core defence outlays from roughly €95 billion next year to about €162 billion in 2029, lifting military spending from around 2 percent of gross domestic product to the new 3.5 percent target. Berlin is simultaneously stepping up support for Kyiv. During a 12 June visit to the Ukrainian capital, Defence Minister Boris Pistorius pledged an additional €1.9 billion in military assistance, taking Germany’s committed aid for 2025 to about €9 billion and including funding to co-produce long-range weapons.
