Greece has implemented a new tourist tax of 20 euros for passengers disembarking from cruise ships at the popular islands of Mykonos and Santorini. This measure, which took effect on July 1, 2025, aims to address the challenges posed by overtourism on these highly frequented destinations. The tax applies per passenger and is part of a broader effort by Greek authorities to regulate the influx of tourists to these islands. The legislation was adopted last year and is now being enforced as a way to manage tourism sustainably. Meanwhile, Mexico has also introduced a graduated tourist tax on cruise passengers, starting at five dollars from July 1, 2025, increasing to 10 dollars in 2026-2027, and reaching 15 dollars thereafter, with plans to rise to 21 dollars between 2028 and 2030.
