Guinness World Records has certified Nash Keen, a boy from Ankeny, Iowa, as the most premature baby ever to survive. Keen was born on 5 July 2024 at just 21 weeks’ gestation—133 days before full term—at the University of Iowa Health Care Stead Family Children’s Hospital. He weighed 10 ounces (about 283 grams) and measured 24 centimetres at birth. Doctors initially gave him virtually no chance of survival; neonatologist Patrick McNamara said available data suggested a 0 percent survival probability at that gestational age. After spending six months in the neonatal intensive-care unit, Keen was discharged in January and has since been described by his parents, Mollie and Randall, as a healthy, energetic child who “is always smiling.” His record surpasses the previous mark set in 2020 by Curtis Means, who was born at 21 weeks and one day in Alabama. Keen celebrated his first birthday earlier this month, a milestone that prompted Guinness to formalize the new record.
