Actor Michelle Pfeiffer used her social-media accounts on Thursday to criticize the recent U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval of Apeel Sciences’ edible coating for organic produce, calling the spray “very concerning” and warning that consumers cannot see or easily remove it. Apeel Sciences, founded in 2012 by James Rogers, says the plant-based coating extends the shelf life of fruit and vegetables and can be washed off with warm water and light scrubbing. The company has emphasized that Bill Gates has no ownership stake, although the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation awarded Apeel two grants in 2012 and 2015 totaling just under $1.1 million. Pfeiffer reposted claims that the coating could make organic produce unsafe and circulated a list of grocery chains said to be avoiding products treated with Apeel. The company responded by reiterating that its ingredients—mono- and diglycerides naturally found in many foods—are widely used and already present in everyday items such as bread and salad dressing. The FDA cleared the use of Apeel on USDA-certified organic produce earlier this week, expanding the product’s potential reach across U.S. retailers. While Pfeiffer’s comments have reignited online skepticism around food-tech interventions, regulators and the company maintain the coating meets existing safety standards.
