Firefighters from Lacey Fire District 3 in Washington used a dose of Narcan to revive a small puppy found unresponsive in a vehicle contaminated with fentanyl on Tuesday, the department said in a statement posted the following day. Crews discovered the dog during a call-out, administered the opioid-reversal spray typically reserved for human patients, and reported that the animal quickly regained consciousness and is recovering well. The department described the rescue as an unusual but increasingly necessary application of naloxone as fentanyl proliferates beyond human users to pets and wildlife. Authorities have not released information about the vehicle’s occupants or whether any arrests were made. The incident underscores growing public-safety concerns around accidental fentanyl exposure and the expanding role of first responders who now routinely carry Narcan in the United States.
