Mexican federal authorities, in coordination with the FBI, have conducted several major operations targeting drug trafficking, fuel theft, and extortion across multiple states. On June 21, 2025, three individuals, including an American citizen and a dual national, were arrested in Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, with 110,000 fentanyl pills seized. Subsequently, on July 2, two men were detained in Sonora after authorities confiscated 200,000 fentanyl pills hidden on a passenger bus. In Guerrero, the Mexican Navy intercepted a semi-submersible vessel carrying more than 3.5 tons of cocaine valued at approximately 846 million pesos, detaining three foreign nationals. A large-scale operation against fuel theft (huachicol) led to the dismantling of a criminal network operating in Mexico City, Estado de México, Querétaro, Hidalgo, and Coahuila, resulting in 32 arrests, including five considered priority targets. Authorities seized 15.4 million liters of illicit fuel in Coahuila, the largest such confiscation during the current administration, involving 129 tanker trucks. Additional fuel theft seizures included nearly 933,000 liters of crude oil in Veracruz. In Oaxaca, the Navy seized over 559 kilograms of cocaine and detained four individuals, with the drug valued at more than 130 million pesos. Amid these enforcement efforts, the Mexican government, led by Secretary of Security Omar García Harfuch and President Claudia Sheinbaum, announced a National Strategy against Extortion, aiming to combat the crime concentrated in eight states that account for 66% of extortion cases. This strategy includes victim support protocols, creation of local units, and legislative reforms to enable prosecution without victim complaints. The government also reported a 24.5% decrease in intentional homicides in the first nine months of the current administration and over 25,000 arrests for high-impact crimes. These coordinated operations reflect an intensified federal campaign against organized crime and illicit activities in Mexico.
