Ahead of the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Abhishek Banerjee has predicted that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will secure fewer than 50 seats, a decline from the 77 seats it won in 2021. This assertion was reiterated by TMC All India General Secretary Kunal Ghosh, who also projected that TMC would win more than 256 seats in the upcoming polls. Meanwhile, BJP's Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, led a rally demanding the removal of Rohingya refugees' names from the voter list, alleging illegal infiltration. BJP MLAs have consistently called for a voter list revision to exclude Rohingya Muslims, emphasizing a demand for a "Rohingya-free West Bengal." West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee responded to these allegations by affirming respect for all Indian citizens and languages, condemning any atrocities against Bengalis, and rejecting accusations labeling Bengalis as Rohingyas or Bangladeshis. BJP MLA Agnimitra Paul criticized Mamata Banerjee for her stance on Rohingyas and claimed that she should be held accountable for alleged atrocities. BJP leader Dilip Ghosh supported the call for voter list scrutiny similar to that being conducted in Bihar, highlighting migration issues and the need for electoral reforms in West Bengal.
