The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has registered a First Information Report (FIR) against 34 individuals, including government officials, for manipulating the regulatory framework of medical colleges across India. The investigation uncovered widespread irregularities and corruption in the inspection and regulatory processes involving senior officials from the Union Health Ministry, the National Medical Commission (NMC), intermediaries, private medical college representatives, and top educationists. Among those named in the FIR are a former University Grants Commission (UGC) head and a self-styled godman. The scam, described by the CBI as one of the largest in the history of India's medical education sector, reportedly involved crores of rupees in bribes, funneled through hawala channels and intermediaries such as Dr. Virendra Kumar and Shivam Pandey. Dr. Jitu Lal Meena, a former whole-time member of the NMC Medical Assessment and Rating Board, is specifically accused of receiving substantial bribes. Additionally, a separate case has emerged involving the Pharmacy Council of India (PCI), with its president, Dr. Montu Patel, accused of turning the regulatory body into a private club characterized by favoritism, bribery, and political manipulation. The CBI’s findings expose a nexus that compromised the integrity of medical education regulation and approval processes nationwide.
I'm sure you must have heard about a very popular statement by our Prime Minister: "Na khilaunga, na khane dunga!" But the reality is "khaunga bhi, khilwaunga bhi..." Two massive scams, one in the NMC and another in the Pharmacy Council of India, have been exposed by the CBI. https://t.co/2tPY322Afz
