Jalaluddin, also known as Chhangur Baba, has been arrested by the Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) for masterminding a large illegal religious conversion racket primarily based in Balrampur, Uttar Pradesh. The racket reportedly involved the conversion of over 3,000 Hindu girls, with victims alleging coercion, torture, and exploitation. Investigations revealed that the operation received substantial foreign funding, estimated between Rs 100 crore to Rs 500 crore, with financial trails leading through Nepal and connections to countries including Pakistan and Muslim nations. The network allegedly used hawala channels and maintained multiple bank accounts, some overseas, to launder money. Chhangur Baba and his associates, including an aide named Neetu alias Nasreen, have been placed under extended police custody for interrogation. Following the arrest, authorities conducted raids and bulldozer demolitions on Chhangur Baba's properties, including a 40-room mansion in Balrampur and illegal constructions on government land. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has intensified the probe with raids at 14 locations across Uttar Pradesh and Mumbai, seizing cash, gold, luxury vehicles, and property documents linked to the racket. The Special Task Force (STF) also apprehended Chhangur Baba's nephew, Sohrab, on related charges. The investigation uncovered a sophisticated network involving agents and codewords to conceal activities, with allegations of attempts to establish an Islamic nation by 2047. Authorities are examining the involvement of officials and other masterminds who remain at large. Chhangur Baba has denied all charges, claiming innocence. The case has drawn political attention and sparked debates on religious conversion practices and communal harmony in the region.
