Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta was assaulted during a weekly public hearing event, known as Jan Sunvai, at her Civil Lines residence on August 20, 2025. The attacker, identified as Rajesh Khimji from Rajkot, Gujarat, reportedly slapped Gupta, pulled her hair, and hurled abuse. Delhi Police apprehended Khimji and have taken him into custody; he has been sent to a five-day police remand. Investigations revealed that the accused conducted reconnaissance of Gupta's residences, including her Shalimar Bagh home, filming and photographing the locations prior to the attack. An FIR has been registered under section 109(1) BNS, which pertains to an attempt to murder. Gupta sustained injuries to her hand, shoulder, and back but is reported to be stable and recovering. Following the incident, additional security measures, including deployment of CRPF personnel and repositioning of CCTV cameras at her residence, have been implemented. Gupta has expressed that the attack was a cowardly attempt to undermine her commitment to serving Delhi. Political leaders across parties, including members of the BJP, AAP, Congress, and others, condemned the attack, calling for strict action and emphasizing the importance of non-violence in democratic processes. Gupta resumed public engagements on August 22, leaving her residence for the first time since the assault. Police also detained two individuals suspected of causing disturbances near an event attended by Gupta in Gandhi Nagar. The investigation continues from multiple angles to determine the motives and any conspiratorial elements behind the attack.
