A Delhi magistrate has imposed an unusual sanction on four defendants in a criminal-trespass case after they repeatedly failed to file their bail bonds. Judicial Magistrate First Class Saurabh Goyal, sitting at the Dwarka Courts, convicted the men and one woman of contempt under Section 228 of the Indian Penal Code for "wasting the time of the court." In an order dated 15 July and made public on Thursday, the magistrate directed Kuldeep, Rakesh, Upasana and Anand to stand inside the courtroom with their hands raised straight in the air until the court adjourned for the day. The order followed two unheeded calls between 10:00 a.m. and 11:40 a.m. for the accused to furnish the required sureties. Kuldeep was additionally remanded to 14 days’ judicial custody when he still had not produced the paperwork by 11:40 a.m. His lawyers returned at 12:48 p.m. with the documents, after which the court accepted a personal bond and a surety bond of Rs 10,000 each and released him. The matter, which stems from a 2018 land-dispute complaint, has been listed for further proceedings on 11 August.
