Alphabet Inc.’s Google plans to invest about $6 billion to build a 1-gigawatt data centre and associated power infrastructure in Visakhapatnam, in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, according to state officials cited by Reuters. The project represents Google’s first large-scale data-centre investment in India and, by capacity and spend, is set to be the largest such facility in Asia. Roughly $2 billion of the outlay is earmarked for renewable-energy generation dedicated to the site, part of Andhra Pradesh’s goal of attracting 6 GW of data-centre capacity within five years. The commitment extends Google’s multi-billion-dollar expansion of data centres across Asia and follows the company’s broader plan to spend about $75 billion globally this year on cloud infrastructure.
