Amazon is constructing one of the largest data centers in Indiana, spanning 1,200 acres, to support artificial intelligence development in collaboration with AI startup Anthropic. The project, known as Project Rainier, involves building a massive AI supercluster that incorporates approximately 640,000 of Amazon's own Trainium2 chips, each capable of 1.3 petaFLOPS FP8 performance. This ultra-cluster, potentially spanning dozens of data centers, represents the largest deployment of Amazon's in-house silicon to date and is designed to train a single AI model across the entire facility. The initiative highlights Amazon Web Services' (AWS) efforts to advance AI infrastructure with cutting-edge computing power, including GPUs and AI chips. This development is part of a broader trend in the tech industry, with legacy technology companies like Oracle, Cisco, IBM, and HPE also playing roles in the evolving AI ecosystem.
