No direction given to banks to deactivate PM Jan Dhan Yojana accounts: DFS https://t.co/yLBGSy0d02
#NewsAlert | "No directions given to banks to close inactive PM Jan Dhan Yojana accounts," says Finance Ministry @FinMinIndia #NirmalaSitharaman #JanDhanaccounts https://t.co/hvrNaCe91f
India’s Department of Financial Services said it has not instructed banks to close inactive Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana accounts, countering media reports that suggested a shutdown order was issued. The ministry added that it continually tracks inoperative PMJDY accounts and asks lenders to contact holders to reactivate them, but no mass closures have been planned or approved. Instead, DFS has launched a three-month nationwide campaign that began 1 July to boost use of Jan Dhan accounts and allied welfare schemes such as Jeevan Jyoti Bima and the Atal Pension Yojana. As part of the drive, banks will carry out pending know-your-customer renewals and seek to bring dormant accounts back into regular use.
