The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has deactivated approximately 1.15 crore Aadhaar numbers since the program began 14 years ago, despite around 11.7 crore deaths occurring in the country during the same period. This discrepancy was revealed through a Right to Information (RTI) application filed by India Today TV. In response, UIDAI has intensified its efforts to maintain the accuracy and integrity of the Aadhaar database by deactivating Aadhaar numbers of deceased individuals. The authority is collaborating with the Registrar General of India, having accessed over 1.55 crore death records to facilitate this process. Additionally, UIDAI has launched a new portal called 'Report Death of Aadhaar Holder' to enable proactive reporting and further improve the deactivation of Aadhaar numbers linked to deceased persons.
