India’s Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has begun a 100-day Pradhan Mantri TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan, intensifying efforts to eliminate tuberculosis nationwide by 2025. The campaign urges people with persistent cough, fever or weight loss to seek testing at the nearest health centre, complete their full course of treatment and use masks to prevent airborne transmission. Officials say tuberculosis can spread through cough, sneeze and even saliva, and if untreated may damage organs beyond the lungs, including the kidneys, spine and brain. The ministry is publicising a toll-free helpline, 1800-11-6666, for information on symptoms, diagnostics and free medication available through the public health system. The initiative calls on community volunteers, branded NiKshay Mitras, to provide nutritional, medical and psychological support to patients. Film actor Rajkummar Rao and former Miss World Manushi Chhillar have joined public-service announcements urging balanced diet, regular exercise and adherence to drug regimens, underscoring the government’s message that early detection and disciplined treatment can defeat the disease.
