India’s Ministry of External Affairs said it "does not take any position or speak on matters concerning beliefs and practices of faith and religion," after the Dalai Lama commented on the future continuity of the Dalai Lama institution. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal told reporters on 4 July that the government respects all faiths but considers questions of religious succession to be strictly internal to the community involved. He added that New Delhi has consistently maintained this stance.
