India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Parvathaneni Harish, told a UN General Assembly debate on Afghanistan that New Delhi’s immediate priorities remain the provision of humanitarian and development assistance to the Afghan people. He underscored India’s “long-standing friendship and special relationship” with Afghanistan and said the country would continue to support its neighbour despite the challenging political environment. Harish welcomed the UNGA resolution’s “strong condemnation” of the 22 April 2025 terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir, which New Delhi has blamed on cross-border militants. The envoy said the language in the resolution underscored the international community’s shared interest in combating terrorism in and around Afghanistan. The ambassador added that India would work with UN agencies and other partners to deliver food, medicines and infrastructure support, reiterating New Delhi’s commitment to the welfare of the Afghan people while emphasising respect for Afghanistan’s sovereignty and pluralistic traditions.
