India’s Ministry of External Affairs urged its citizens overseas to respect local laws after U.S. authorities detained two Indian nationals in separate incidents—one in Washington on child-pornography charges and another reportedly for shoplifting. “Indian nationals must abide by the law and order of the country they visit,” spokesman Randhir Jaiswal told reporters in New Delhi. Jaiswal said New Delhi is “closely following” both cases and is in touch with U.S. officials where necessary. He added that the government remains engaged with Russian counterparts as it seeks information on 16 Indians reported missing in Russia. Asked about Washington’s warning that India’s purchases of Russian oil could trigger new tariffs, Jaiswal said the government is monitoring developments but did not elaborate on potential next steps. On regional issues, the spokesperson said India welcomes the prospect of inclusive elections in Bangladesh and continues to watch the situation there amid recent unrest. He also called for a restoration of peace and stability in Syria following Israeli airstrikes.
