Justice B.R. Gavai, a Supreme Court judge and the Executive Chairman of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA), has highlighted significant achievements and challenges in the Indian judiciary. This year, three national Lok Adalats facilitated the resolution of over 7.7 crore cases, showcasing the judiciary's efforts to address case backlogs. Justice Gavai, who is set to become the next Chief Justice of India (CJI), emphasized the importance of NALSA's outreach to ordinary citizens and discussed the judiciary's prioritization of special leave petitions (SLPs) to tackle pendency. Speaking on Human Rights Day, he noted the judiciary's responsibility to address urgent cases, including those involving critically ill individuals. Justice Gavai also acknowledged the challenges faced by the judiciary, including observations from Nagpur Jail, but reiterated his commitment to improving access to justice.
