Kerala’s Health Department has issued an alert in the northern districts of Kozhikode, Malappuram and Palakkad after preliminary tests indicated two suspected cases of Nipah virus infection. An 18-year-old woman from Malappuram died on 1 July with brain haemorrhage, while a 38-year-old woman is undergoing treatment in Palakkad. Both samples have been dispatched to the National Institute of Virology in Pune for confirmation. Health Minister Veena George convened an emergency meeting on Friday and directed officials to activate the state’s Nipah protocol. Twenty-six-member rapid-response teams have been formed in each of the three districts to conduct contact tracing, monitor symptoms and coordinate public awareness campaigns. District collectors have been asked to declare containment zones, and helplines have been set up for residents. The state last battled Nipah in 2024 and has recorded five outbreaks since 2018. Officials have urged healthcare facilities to report any unexplained deaths and have sought police assistance to track potential contacts while awaiting laboratory confirmation.
