Kerala state in India is on high alert following the detection of multiple Nipah virus cases, including two confirmed infections reported on July 4, 2025, in the districts of Malappuram and Palakkad. An 18-year-old girl in Kozhikode district died from acute encephalitis syndrome, later confirmed as a Nipah virus infection, while a 38-year-old woman in Malappuram remains in critical condition. Health authorities have intensified surveillance and contact tracing across three districts—Kozhikode, Malappuram, and Palakkad—with over 540 individuals under monitoring. The state government has declared containment zones and activated control rooms to prevent further spread. The Union Health Ministry is considering dispatching a central team to assist local efforts. This marks the eighth appearance of Nipah virus in Kerala over the past eight years. A recent suspected second death linked to Nipah has led to heightened alert across six districts. Health Minister Veena George has chaired high-level meetings to coordinate response measures. Fever surveillance and tracing of contacts continue, with 46 new contacts traced recently. The outbreak has drawn attention from the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP), which are closely monitoring the situation. So far in the past year, Kerala has reported six Nipah virus cases, underscoring the region as a persistent hotspot for the disease.
