Kerala is on high alert following the detection of two Nipah virus cases in the districts of Malappuram and Palakkad. An 18-year-old girl in Kozhikode died from acute encephalitis syndrome, later confirmed as a Nipah infection, while a 38-year-old woman in Malappuram is currently undergoing treatment. Health authorities have intensified surveillance and contact tracing efforts across three districts—Malappuram, Palakkad, and Kozhikode—with over 425 individuals identified as contacts, including more than 100 linked to the Palakkad patient who remains in critical condition. The Kerala Health Department has activated state control rooms and declared containment zones to prevent further spread. The Union Health Ministry is considering dispatching a central team to assist local efforts. This marks the eighth occurrence of the Nipah virus in Kerala over the past eight years, typically surfacing during the monsoon season. Additionally, an infant death in a private clinic has been registered as a case under investigation. The National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) is closely monitoring the situation in coordination with the Kerala Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP).
