King Charles III on 15 July received India’s men’s and women’s cricket squads at St. James’s Palace in London, continuing the monarchy’s tradition of welcoming Commonwealth teams touring the United Kingdom. The monarch greeted captains Shubman Gill and Harmanpreet Kaur, head coach Gautam Gambhir and officials from the Board of Control for Cricket in India, posing for photographs and chatting informally with the players. Gill said the King was “kind and generous,” adding that Charles sympathised with the side over fast-bowler Mohammed Siraj’s freak last-wicket dismissal that sealed India’s 22-run loss to England at Lord’s a day earlier. The defeat put the hosts 2–1 ahead in the five-match Test series. Kaur, leading the women’s team on a concurrent limited-overs tour, described the audience as a memorable first meeting with the sovereign. The engagement provided a brief respite for the men’s side before the fourth Test later this month and underscored the Crown’s role in fostering sporting ties within the Commonwealth. Both Indian teams will remain in the UK for fixtures scheduled through August.
