The Maharashtra Legislature on Tuesday felicitated newly sworn-in Chief Justice of India Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai during a special event in the Central Hall of Vidhan Bhavan, Mumbai. Lawmakers from both houses applauded Gavai’s elevation, marking the first time in more than a decade that a judge from the state has risen to the nation’s top judicial post. Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the Monsoon Session, Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said the state government is examining a plan to award certain development works to women-run cooperative societies. He added that approvals are also being readied to allow labour cooperatives to undertake contracts, a move he said would broaden participation in public projects.
