West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah warning that incendiary narratives, fake videos and other provocative material circulating on social-media platforms are fuelling violence, communal tension and crimes against women. In the letter dated 3 July 2025, she also cited a surge in financial fraud, identity theft and online harassment, saying cyber-crime is now exacting “a severe toll on individuals and institutions alike.” Banerjee argued that the existing legal framework has failed to keep pace with the rapidly evolving digital ecosystem and the sophisticated methods used by malicious actors. She urged the Home Ministry to introduce “stringent legislative and policy interventions” to deter both the creation of provocative online content and offences committed in cyberspace. The chief minister added that awareness campaigns and digital-literacy programmes are needed so citizens can better identify and report suspicious activity, noting that vulnerable groups such as women, children, the elderly and the economically disadvantaged are most at risk.
