West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has protested an official NITI Aayog document that depicted Bihar in place of West Bengal on a map meant to illustrate the eastern state. The mistake appeared in a summary report on West Bengal published on the federal think-tank’s website on 9 July. In a letter to NITI Aayog Vice Chairperson Suman K. Bery the same day, Banerjee called the misrepresentation a “grave lapse” and demanded an unconditional public apology, immediate rectification of the report and safeguards to prevent similar errors. She said the blunder showed an “alarming lack of diligence and respect” toward India’s states. Trinamool Congress leaders echoed the chief minister’s criticism, describing the episode as an affront to Bengal’s identity and culture and accusing the agency of routinely overlooking the state’s development priorities. NITI Aayog has yet to respond publicly to the letter, leaving the dispute to add to longstanding tensions between the West Bengal government and New Delhi.
