Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi used his Independence Day address on 15 August to announce the creation of a task force charged with delivering “next-generation” economic and governance reforms on a set timeline. Modi said the body will help realise the vision of “Viksit Bharat,” or a developed India, and accelerate policy changes the administration has pursued over the past decade. Alongside the new task force, Modi signalled a forthcoming review of the Goods and Services Tax regime and reaffirmed the government’s Atmanirbhar, or self-reliance, drive expanding from defence to sectors such as fertilisers. On security, he referenced a new initiative titled Mission Sudarshan Chakra, without detailing its scope.
