Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi used his Independence Day address on 15 August to announce that the country’s first domestically manufactured semiconductor chips will reach the market by the end of this year. Modi said the programme is being executed on “mission mode,” underscoring New Delhi’s ambition to reduce reliance on imported components and build a strategic electronics supply chain at home. The prime minister also challenged India’s scientific community, engineers and government departments to develop indigenous jet engines for home-grown fighter aircraft, framing the push as a critical step toward self-reliance in defence technology.
