The Nasdaq 100 Index entered a correction on Friday, marking a 10.6% decline from its recent peak, driven by a selloff in technology stocks. This downturn reflects a broader market rotation away from companies associated with artificial intelligence, with significant losses in major tech firms like Nvidia, Amazon, and Microsoft. The correction comes amidst a backdrop of economic uncertainty fueled by US trade policy shifts, contributing to a volatile week for the markets. The S&P 500 also experienced significant volatility, posting its worst weekly performance since September, with a decline of 3.1% for the week. Despite daily fluctuations, including a 0.6% rise on the final trading day, the index closed down from its recent highs. The Dow Jones Industrial Average, however, managed a slight increase of 0.52% on the last day of trading. The S&P 500 marked its third straight week of declines, the longest losing streak since mid-July and early August last year. The US Dollar Index saw a sharp decline, marking its biggest weekly loss since November 2022, dropping 2.4%. This weakening of the dollar is attributed to uncertainties surrounding US trade policies and a stabilizing but weakening US labor market, as indicated by the February jobs report which showed 151,000 jobs added and a rise in the unemployment rate to 4.1%. Wage growth was reported at 4%, while the labor force participation rate fell to 62.4%. The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) job cuts contributed to a decline in federal government employment by 10,000 in February. Market expectations are for three interest rate cuts by the Federal Reserve this year. In contrast, the Indian stock market showed resilience with the BSE Sensex and Nifty50 indices posting gains of 1.54% and 1.93% respectively for the week. Sectoral indices in India ended in the green, with notable gains in the metal, media, energy, oil & gas, and PSU bank sectors. The Bloomberg Magnificent 7 Total Return Index, which entered a correction of its own in late February, fell 1.1% on Friday.
